Dental Bridge or Implant? Here’s What to Know

Some people lose their teeth due to a plethora of reasons, like having gum problems, some losing the teeth, and some due to encountering injury in their lives. Hormonal changes and osteoporosis are also some reasons responsible for people losing their teeth. Therefore, some prefer to wear dentures for missing teeth, but sometimes, it becomes irritating for them as whenever they want to eat something, they need to be very careful in this matter because they can only eat the items that their teeth can handle. This is a bit irritating to them as they are not able to eat the items that they desire and have to switch to other things just to satisfy their hunger. Although their hunger is satisfied, their desires are not.

Moreover, while eating, dentures can move in your mouth, and if you are in a restaurant with a lot of people, it becomes quite embarrassing for you as people can come to know that you are wearing dentures. In addition to this, you are required to clean your dentures from time to time; however, for this, you need to remove those dentures, and people find it also irritating.

Alternatives to dentures:

Dental implant

Those who find wearing dentures irritating and frustrating can go for a dental implant. These are artificial tooth roots, and a surgeon places these roots into the jawbone in order to replace the missing teeth of a person; small holes are made in the jaw where these roots are placed. Dental implants are of two types: endosteal implants. These are directly placed into your jawbone. The other category is Subperiosteal implants, which are placed on the jawbone.

You can go for a single-tooth implant; under this, your surgeon will replace only one tooth, and you can opt for multiple-tooth implants. If your few teeth are missing, then your surgeon will replace them all, or you can prefer a full mouth implant. Under the full mouth implant, if you have lost all your teeth for some reason, then doctors prefer this type of implant. These last for a long time, and the main benefit is that you can clean them in your mouth only.

Dental bridge (also known as bridge teeth)

People also prefer bridge teeth to replace missing teeth. The gap is filled by these bridge teeth; however, first, there is a requirement for functioning teeth on either side of the gap. Artificial teeth are used to replace missing teeth in the bridge. These are fit by using dental adhesive. You can eat the things that you want by having these bridge teeth. You can clean them in the mouth; however, no special care is required for this.

The following things are looked after by the surgeon to know what type of bridge will be the best for you:

  • The age of a person matters when deciding this.
  • The surgeon checks the total number of teeth missing in the mouth.
  • The surgeon also checks the size of the gap as well.
  • The most important thing that needs to be taken into consideration is the condition of the teeth near the gap.
  • The overall health of teeth and gums is also checked.
